Link to first/practice Emeralda piece [link]

How this work came to be is 1 odd, 2 wanting to do what I didn’t/couldn’t do with my first Emeralda drawing, and 3 full circle in nature. What got the ball rolling to create this work was a math class. Yes I said a math class albeit one gear specifically for art students. I got the idea to do this work, EMERALDa, when taking the tessellations segment of my math class. One day we were discussing wallpaper patterns in class and explain how they get their names from crystal formation patterns. This gave me the idea to do some art work of a character with a crystal association (hence EMERALDa) and to depict them using wallpaper patterns that are akin to crystal formation patterns of the crystal they are associated with to color in crystal areas of them in while coloring in non-crystal areas with other textures or patterns as I saw fit. Enough I didn’t do stuff that way I still went with the idea of doing a drawing that is color in with patterns and textures. I wasn’t entirely happy with EMERALDa as it didn’t have a develop background, wasn’t a true composition but rather a character design, had more patterns then I like merely to meet the requirements of my tessellations final, didn’t show Emeralda is a nano machine colony, and her ability to change her arms and legs into stuff like sword arms and scythe feet.

Before I had a chance to start deciding on how I deal with my dissatisfaction with EMERALDa via a second piece the first class meeting of the visualizations segment of my math class took place. The keys aspects of that first class meeting of importance were the mention of being taught about the forth dimension and the discussion of the final for the segment. I decided I wanted to show the visualization of mathematics in an artwork by using math formulas and abbreviations for texture and representation of certain aspects of the subject manner in the piece.

In Xenogears the forth dimension/wave existence is contacted and interacted with via high technology (the Zohar and Deus System) and is responsible for reincarnation (Fei/Abel and Elly/Nephilim). Nano machines are used to create artificial life forms (Emeralda) and to gain immortality (Krelian) which also causes disconnection from death, reincarnation, human instrumentality, the wave existence/forth dimension, and God.

The exponent abbreviations on Emeralda’s sword arm are representative of nano machines, their size, and that Emeralda is a nano machine colony. Through the technology used to create this work and by using the human invention/math formula x= (p, q, r, s) in the way I did I show how technology can both assist and bar interaction with the forth dimension in Xenogears.

I feel this piece pulls from my previous works in the following galleries: lines, character and avi art, painting and printmaking department, and photography. I want to do more works similar to this one in a series of Square Enix SQUARES. Right now I am
considering drawing either Ramza from Final Fantasy Tactics or Magus from Chrono Trigger next. Additionally in regards to EMERALDa I had considered doing the piece of Emma Frost from X-Men instead. I might still do it but since she is a Marvel Comics character she can’t be part of my Square Enix SQUARES series but I suppose I could do a series of X-Men base fan art works as well.

EDIT some additional very important comments I forgot to include as I mention for the practice piece

The textures I use were all very intentionally chosen and use to reference aspects of Emeralda. As such I feel that if I had imposed shading over them I might take away from the textures. The hair is rough emerald which reference to Emerald in EMERALDa and to give her Emerald green color hair Emerald texture as well. Her eyes are tiger eyes which I choose since she is a fierce fighter and tigers are too. The black cloth texture kind of look like steel mail to me and I thought the idea of clothing/armor being compose of several small linked metal rings was a nice metaphor for nano machines. The red cloth texture is a rusty surface which represents that Emeralda was abandon machinery (she is composed entirely of nano machines). The cloak scarf pattern is a tessellation (fancy math term for pattern) and I thought having a mathematical base texture would be nice since high tech and math tend to go hand and hand.

I like the colouring you used here and how thoughtful you have been combining the themes machine and mathematic =)
